Charlotte McNutt

Charlotte McNutt

Charlotte was born in Washington, D.C. and shortly thereafter moved to Northern Virginia where she began her studies of classical ballet under Barbara Harding. Her studies then took her to Fairfax Ballet Company with Thomas Russell, and the McLean Ballet Company with Molly Vick, Edward Caton, Leon Folkine, Robert Davis, and Eugene Collins. She also studied at the Virginia Ballet Company with Oleg Tupine and Tatiana Rousseau. She then went on to study and perform with the National Ballet of Washington, D.C., under Frederick Franklin and Ben Stevenson. While there, she danced with Edward Villela, Michelle Lees, Kirk Peterson, Denise LeCompte, and Desmond Kelly, among many others.

After moving to the Annapolis, Maryland area, Charlotte became a founding member and dancer with the Ballet Theatre of Annapolis, now Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Maryland’s only truly professional ballet company. Throughout her 28 year career with BTM, she danced many roles including the DewDrop Fairy and Mother Gigone in the Nutcracker, and created such roles as the lead Temptress in Artistic Director Edward Stewart's 11th Commandment and the mother in Three Faces of Eve. Other roles include the Queen in Sleeping Beauty and the nurse in Romeo and Juliet.

As well as performing with Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Charlotte taught at the Ballet Theatre of Maryland School. She taught students ages 2 to 73, levels including Creative Movement through Advanced and she taught the company professionals. She has had instruction in the Cecchetti style under the tutelage of Valerie Deakin and Cherry Dowling. She studied the American style with Michelle Lees and Eric Hampton. She received certification in the Vaganova style through study with John White and Caryl Maxwell.

She worked as Ballet Mistress and Rehearsal Assistant for the Ballet Theatre of Maryland under the direction of the founding Artistic Director, Edward Stewart. She served as Director of the BTM Performance Workshop outreach program, whose purpose was to train dancers in the art of performing. Her other duties for BTM included Stage Manager for several of the Company and School performances. She worked as Artistic Director for several of the annual School performances and as School Administrator. She has made costumes and helped build sets. She also worked as Executive Administrative Assistant for three years for the current BTM Artistic Director.
