COPA Competitions

Students at the Centre also have an opportunity to dance in competitions as soloists; and on the Centre Stars Dance Company in tap, jazz and lyrical routines. Although competition dance requires a strong commitment and is certainly not for everyone, we are happy to provide the opportunity for those who wish to pursue dance on this level. Our approach to competitions is that they should provide a positive experience for students, giving them an occasion to perform and be critiqued; to learn from both that assessment and watching others. Also, to enjoy themselves and use the opportunity to get to know classmates, families and other dancers, while developing relationships and have experiences that make “dance” a very special part of their lives.

Through staff and student involvement, the Centre is active in Dance Masters of America. DMA is a leading national organization of dance educators and offers many opportunities for growth, for both students and staff.

As studio host for the statewide Carolina Dance Masters October Syllabus Study and Exam Week-end and the February Winter Workshop, we also look forward to seeing our students participate in the Carolina Dance Masters Fall Convention & Miss Dance North Carolina Pageant at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.

For the past 5 years one of our students has represented Carolina Dance Masters at the national scholarship competition.

During July 2005 in Nashville, Karla Allen, CDM Petite Miss was 2nd runner up.

Helen Ann Woodard was a top 10 finalist in the Teen division.
